RAILWAY BRIDGE REMOVED TO MAKE WAY FOR £20 MIL. WORCESTER BUSINESS PARK

26 February 2008

A redundant railway bridge on Tolladine Road, Worcester, was removed by crane in a six-hour delicate operation as part of the £20 million development to create Great Western Business Park on the site of the former Tolladine Goods Yard.

St Modwen, the UK¹s leading regeneration specialist, has started on the infrastructure for and the first phase of the business park which will provide 109,000 sq ft of employment units from 2,200 sq ft to 15,000 sq ft which will be available from September.

Road diversions were put in place to allow the 12 steel and 12 concrete sections of the bridge to be cut and lifted. Each of the steel sections weighed 38 tonnes and the concrete sections, 34 tonnes.

The 408-tonnes of concrete is being recycled and re-used on site and the 456 tonnes of steel is also being recycled.

Julie Rossiter of St Modwen, said: "The demolition operation and road diversions were carefully planned in conjunction with Worcestershire County Council . We would like to thank the general public for their patience during the road closure. We can now forge ahead with developing the business park that will provide new job opportunities and significant economic benefits for Worcester.

"The 100 per cent recycling of the bridge sections is just one example of St Modwen¹s commitment to sustainability which embodies a target to re-use some 90 per cent of demolition materials. Here we have managed to exceed that target."
