St. Modwen, the UK’s leading regeneration specialist, has exchanged an agreement with New Earth Solutions Group Ltd and obtained planning consent to build a waste treatment and recycling facility at Access 18, Avonmouth. The 11 acre brownfield site to be used for the facility is part of the larger 212 acre employment site owned by St. Modwen.
Consent for the 300,000 sq ft building follows the award of a waste management contract to New Earth Solutions, to treat residual household waste for the West of England Partnership. The Partnership covers the four Councils of Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire.
The aim of the contract is to ensure that there is sufficient treatment capacity to divert waste away from landfill, providing environmental benefits and helping local authorities to meet annual targets.
Work on the facility is due to commence later this month and will be completed in April 2011. Approximately 35 jobs will be located at the facility when complete, with 300 construction jobs created during building work.
Rob Skelston, development director for St. Modwen in the South West, comments: “This is a significant partnership project for Access 18 as it will bring a number of employment opportunities to the area, along with a long-term waste management facility for the four local authorities.”
The St. Modwen Access 18 masterplan includes for circa 800,000 sq ft of further employment space which will create circa 2,000 jobs for the region. New Earth Solutions will join existing tenants on site, national paper distributor Antalis, catering supplier Nisbet PLC, Richard Austin Alloys, Flexipads World Class Ltd. and greetings card manufacturer Budget Greeting Cards.
Simon Kingsley, property acquisition manager for New Earth Solutions comments: “We are delighted to have secured the site and achieved planning consent to enable the fulfillment of our contract with the West of England Partnership. This is one of the largest non-PFI waste management contracts to have been awarded in the UK, and demonstrates the continued growth of New Earth Solutions as local authorities strive to meet landfill diversion targets.”
Using patented processes New Earth Solutions recover recyclable materials from the residual waste stream and use the organic element to produce compost for use in restoration and remediation schemes. The proposed facility will be capable of processing up to 200,000 tonnes of waste per year. All processes will be carried out inside the facility.
Over 300,000 sq ft of business accommodation has already been built and sold to date at Access 18, in phases 1 & 2. Thirty acres of land remain offering design and build opportunities on a leasehold and long leasehold basis ranging from 10,000 - 600,000 sq ft.
