JOBS PLEDGE AT CONNAH’S QUAY
10 May 2010
Over 300 retail jobs will be created at St Modwen’s new £15m development at Connah’s Quay, Flintshire, with local people expected to benefit the most. The majority of these jobs at the Ffordd Llanarth site will be provided by the new Morrisons supermarket, with a mixture of full and part time opportunities available. The food retailer has committed to employing local people where possible, and hopes that all of the jobs will be taken up by Flintshire residents. In addition to the Morrisons food store there will be approximately twenty other retail units, 325 car parking spaces, improved pedestrian links and a bus pick-up point. Paul Batho, project director at St Modwen, said: “This development is great news for residents in Connah’s Quay and Flintshire generally. It represents a significant investment in the area and will provide a modern retail centre with a variety of retail outlets and significant improvements to public space. “As well as the new facilities the community can look forward to wider benefits it will create - it will provide a welcome boost to the local economy, with increased spending in the area, a rise in visitors and the creation of hundreds of new jobs.” Gail Roberts, retail recruitment manager at Morrisons, added: “We are always committed to employing local people at our new sites, who can provide excellent customer service, offer local knowledge and understand customer needs. “When customers visit stores we’ve found that the atmosphere is much better if they can see friendly faces from the community working there.” The six acre development is starting to take shape, with the steel building frames recently completed. Demolition of the original 1970s-style centre started in June 2009 and was completed in August 2009. Construction of the new district centre will be completed in the summer of 2010 before being handed over to the retailers to start work on the internal fit-out of the units. Connah’s Quay MOT Testing Centre, Deeside Fish and Chip Shop and Home Bargains have taken units at the scheme and there are deals with other retailers nearing completion. Management recruitment will start in May. Staff recruitment will take place at recruitment open days in July and people are advised to check local press and Job Centre Plus for details. |
