New Covent Garden Market, London

New Covent Garden Market

The New Covent Garden Market site comprises 57 acres and is located on the South Bank of the River Thames at the heart of the Vauxhall Nine Elms Regeneration area. The site is home to the UK’s largest wholesale fruit, vegetable and flower market, comprising over 200 businesses and employing around 2,500 people. Built in 1974, the current market facilities are outmoded and in severe need of replacement. In January 2013, CGMA signed a Development Agreement with VINCI St. Modwen (VSM), a 50/50 joint venture, to lead the redevelopment of the entire site. This transformational regeneration programme extends 57 acres and will see the existing market consolidated onto a single 37 acre site, freeing up c. 20 acres of surplus land for development, used to pay for the delivery of the new market. VSM has now submitted a planning application to the London Borough of Wandsworth. The plans will deliver over 500,000 sq ft (net) of modern market facilities equating to a £130m investment (funded by the release of the 20 acres of surplus land). The surplus land will subsequently be developed to create a new high quality residential-led mixed-use regeneration scheme providing up to 3,000 homes and 135,000 sq ft of commercial accommodation, 100,000 sq ft of retail, leisure and new community facilities, including shops, cafes and restaurants.
