Asda Walmart take massive town centre superstore in Walsall

St Modwen Properties PLC has signed Asda Walmart to take one of the largest town centre food stores in the UK .

The 118,000 sq ft superstore with 1,500 multi-storey car parking spaces and substantial highway work, will be in Walsall town centre, West Midlands, and is being developed as part of a £50 million regeneration scheme by St Modwen in a joint venture with local developer Goold Estates.

The two-level superstore and the multi-storey car park, which will serve the wider scheme, are to be built by the developer on a site which was once home to the former Sainsbury store. Detailed planning consent has been granted and it is hoped to begin construction very soon.

Derek West, director of St Modwen Developments, said: “Asda were keen to take advantage of this fast-track opportunity and I am delighted that St Modwen have been able to create such an important regeneration project.

“It will change the whole character of George Street which for the first time will have shops, together with restaurants and bars, on both sides of the street together with new apartments.” The £25 million Asda store which will create up to 500 new jobs for Walsall, will be in addition to Asda Living which is shortly opening in the town.

Simon Leonard, Asda’s Property Communications Manager, said: “We’re delighted at the prospect of bringing a new Asda to Walsall – it ‘s a town we have wanted to be in for a very long time.

“It is ironic that the decision of one of our competitors to pull out of the town has left the door open for us to participate in this exciting regeneration scheme.

“Our town centre store will provide customers with a choice of high quality goods, including specialist fresh food counters and the popular George clothing range. This announcement demonstrates our continued commitment to Walsall with the opening of our pilot Asda Living stores just days away.”
