COMMUNITY ART COMPETITION GETS UNDERWAY IN WEMBLEY

Community groups in Brent are cleaning their paintbrushes and getting their easels at the ready in preparation for a community art competition which gets underway this week, with teams of people competing to win a £250 cash prize.

Aimed at portraying the cultural diversity and community spirit of the local neighbourhood, the competition has been organised and funded by St. Modwen Homes – the national housebuilder behind the Wembley Central apartment scheme in Central Square – and is supported by Brent Council.

Groups including local youth clubs and senior citizens’ associations have been collecting canvasses and paints and will now have until 22 February to complete the artwork, before the winning group is announced at a presentation event in March. The entries can feature any design and use a variety of materials, the only stipulation being that the artwork must only use the colours of the Wembley Central logo (magenta pink, lime green, yellow, red, white and black).

Cllr Michael Adeyeye, Mayor of Brent, said: “I am delighted to be supporting this exciting endeavour and am pleased that St. Modwen Homes are showing such commitment to encouraging creative talent amongst our diverse community in Brent. I look forward to seeing the winning entry proudly displayed in the new Wembley Central apartments on Central Square next year.”

The entries will be judged by a reviewing panel including officials from St. Modwen Homes, the professional interior designer behind by St. Modwen Homes’ show properties across the country, along with representatives from Brent Council. The winning group will receive a cash prize of £250, which they will be able to spend on new resources and activities, and the winning piece of art will be displayed in the entrance to the Wembley Central apartments for both residents and visitors to see.

Sam Jadavji, sales manager at Wembley Central said: “Wembley is a vibrant and diverse borough featuring a real mix of communities and cultures. The competition is a fantastic opportunity for groups from a variety of different backgrounds to come together and engage in an inclusive, creative competition – giving local people a chance to showcase their artistic talents and creativity.

“With many new residents moving into the new apartments at Wembley Central, we’re committed to working with local people and businesses to continue to develop a thriving community in Brent and the surrounding area. There has been a huge amount of investment in Wembley over the last few years and we are pleased to be a part of the continuing regeneration of this world-renowned borough.”

Margaret Constant, supervisor at Smash Youth Club added: “Activities such as the community art competition provide a great opportunity for young people in the local area to get involved in fun, team-building exercises which break down barriers and develop relationships between elderly communities and young people whilst creating something they can be proud of – keeping adolescents and young people off the streets.

“At Smash Youth Club we work with young people from different backgrounds, providing social activities as well as pastoral support and advice. We can’t wait to get stuck-in and hope to create a piece of art which is both stylish and contemporary to match the modern appearance of the apartments. Of course we’d be thrilled if we did win, as £250 could go towards much needed sports and games equipment for the group, or a day out for everyone to enjoy.”

Located at Central Square – just outside Wembley Central tube station – the Wembley Central apartments have been designed to the highest specification and start in price from £199,995 for a one bedroom apartment. The apartments have all been fitted with high-quality fixtures and fittings including stylish kitchens with Siemens appliances, alongside contemporary bathrooms and spacious living areas. Additionally, modern balconies boast stunning views towards the new Wembley Stadium, Harrow-on-the-Hill and Central London.
