Work began this week on the construction of three new shops in the Market Square extension at Edmonton Green Shopping Centre, North London, which St Modwen Developments (Edmonton) Ltd, a subsidiary of St Modwen Properties PLC, is regenerating in a £53 million scheme.
The shops are due for completion in October and two of them have been pre-let to Bon Marche and Ethel Austin who are each taking a 4,000 sq ft unit on a 15-year lease. Discussions are at an advanced stage with a third national retailer to take the remaining unit.
Colin McQueston, Asset Manager of St Modwen, said: “It is a great boost to have secured these key operators at such an early stage of the redevelopment of the shopping centre. This demonstrates the confidence that the market has, not only in the centre at it stands, but also in the proposals for the regeneration of the area.”
Planning consent has been obtained for the major phase of the retail, leisure and residential scheme which will create up to 750 jobs when completed. The scheme will include 70,000 sq ft of new retail, a 26-stand bus station, a major food store, replacement leisure centre and affordable housing. Construction is due to start early 2004.
Donald Graham, Director of Housing, Enfield Borough Council, said: I am glad to see the redevelopment of the centre gathering pace. It’s good news for Edmonton and the continuing regeneration of the area.”
Kincaid & Co is acting for St Modwen in the letting of the three units. Bon Marche was represented by Mason & Co and Ethel Austin by Hammond Phillips.
