Construction of new JJB Sports unit in Widnes is under starters orders

Construction of a new high profile two-storey state-of-the-art leisure and retail complex for JJB Sports in Widnes town centre is under starters orders.

Widnes Regeneration Ltd, the company jointly formed by St Modwen Properties PLC and Halton Borough Council, has awarded the £1.7 million contract to Caddick Construction, which will complete the 50,000 sq ft building ready for handover in October. Following an extensive fit-out the facility will open early next year.

The £4 million project forms part of a multi-million pound redevelopment of Widnes town centre and is being developed with parking for 160 cars on a brownfield site off Albert Road. JJB Sports has confirmed that its existing store in the town centre will remain open and not be affected by the new store opening.

Paul Batho of Widnes Regeneration Ltd, said: “We are delighted to announce the start of construction on this exciting project which will provide modern health and leisure provision for Widnes combined with a new 25,000 sq ft retail unit selling sports goods.

“The new facility will further bolster Widnes growing reputation as an attractive location for high profile national operators. The leisure club facilities are anticipated to attract around 10,000 members alone.”

Coun. Rob Polhil, Halton Borough Council’s Executive Board member for Development, Planning and Transport, said: “We view this flagship project as a magnet to attract further investment into this important part of the town centre which will be further benefited by the opening of the new Peel House Lane link road to be constructed adjacent to the JJB Sports building.”
