St. Modwen, the owner of Elephant & Castle Shopping Centre, has teamed up with the Royal Court Theatre in support of its new initiative, “Theatre Local”, to bring a season of plays to the iconic centre in London.
The UK’s leading regeneration specialist has donated a unit to the theatre for a six-month stint, providing a base for four productions at the shopping centre, kicking off with “Random” which runs until 27 March. The Royal Court hopes, that by bringing live theatre to the heart of the community in Elephant & Castle, a new generation of theatre lovers will be created.
James Stockdale, development surveyor at St. Modwen, said: “Elephant & Castle Shopping Centre is a great venue for this initiative because it is a true community hub. In the past few months, the centre’s last remaining vacant units have been put to good use – we’ve had a charity fashion show, artists in residence and now the first in a series of theatre productions. It’s a great way to increase footfall, which is now up to around one million people a month.”
Elephant & Castle is a mixed-use shopping centre comprising 135,000 sq ft of retail, 90,000 sq ft of offices and 90,000 sq ft of leisure facilities. Both the centre, and the office space at Hannibal House, are now 99 per cent let.
