The first phase of St Modwen Developments’ £20 million Castle Walk shopping scheme, Newcastle-under-Lyme – one of the Potteries’ principal shopping centres – has opened in good time for Christmas
The highly successful development, which will create a new open street, has reinforced Newcastle’s retail status by already attracting seven new retailers to the town.
Wilkinsons, which has relocated from the Ironmarket and doubled its size to 2,614 sq m (28,139 sq ft) to become the anchor store for Castle Walk, was the first to open. H. Samuel is the other retailer which has relocated from within Newcastle.
The newcomers to the town are JJB Sports, Poundland, Peacocks, Bodycare, Outdoor Venture, The Fragrance Shop and Health Rack. All have opened except Poundland which will open early January.
The first phase totals 5,592 sq m (64,500 sq ft). Phase two, which is scheduled for completion next summer and on which construction is well advanced, will add a further 21 shops totalling 5,295 sq m (57,000 sq ft) .
Already St Modwen has signed up Home Bargains to take 722 sq m (7,768 sq ft) and Card Crazy Ltd to take 328 sq m (3,530 sq ft). A number of other units are in solicitors hands.
Derek West of St Modwen, said: “Castle Walk will be a key factor in revitalising an important retail centre in the Potteries, creating many opportunities for retailers to expand their outlets and providing shoppers with more quality choice.”
Craig Bales of letting agent Lambert Smith Hampton, said: “We are close to agreeing terms with a number of key multiple retailers and are confident of concluding deals on the remaining units before the scheme is fully open. Zone A rents of £50 are being acheived. “
When completed, Castle Walk will form a shopping circle with the new pedestrianised street linking Ironmarket and Hassell Street and the new bus station which was an early feature of the development.
