Government go-ahead for Widnes town centre store

Widnes Regeneration Ltd, the joint company formed between St Modwen Properties PLC and Halton Borough Council to carry out regeneration schemes in Widnes town centre, has been granted planning consent, following a public inquiry, for a 8,361 sq m (90,000 sq ft) food store development in the town centre.

A public inquiry into the new Asda store at Simms Cross at the southern edge of the town centre, which includes a cafe, petrol filling station and a 490-space car park, was held in May.

The new store, which represents the first of four development projects by Widnes Regeneration in Widnes town centre, will replace the current store at Halebank in Widnes and create a further 100 jobs.

In addition to the inquiry decision, Widnes Regeneration has also had confirmation that the Secretary of State is not to call in the outline planning application for a 4,180 sq m (45,000 sq ft) non-food retail development to anchor the northern edge of the town centre.

Michelle Taylor of St Modwen said: “We are obviously very pleased with the Secretary of State’s decision which enables us to progress with the revitalisation of the centre of Widnes.”

Coun. Rob Polhill, Halton Borough Council’s executive board member for Planning, Transportation and Development, said: “We are delighted to secure the Government’s support for these two projects which will revitalise Widnes town centre and building on the success of the Greenoaks development ensures thatWidnes has a retail centre to be proud of.”

Paul Lowe, senior development surveyor for ASDA, said: “We are one step nearer to bringing our customers and colleagues a brand new store. We are particularly pleased that the store will act as a catalyst for the wider regeneration of Widnes town centre.”

The Widnes town centre project is part of St Modwen’s strategy of undertaking major urban regeneration projects in partnership with local authorities.
