Green light for Bedford Town Centre West development
The major redevelopment proposal for the regeneration of Bedford¹s town centre has been given the go-ahead by Bedford Borough Council¹s Planning Committee.
Councillors voted unanimously in support of the Bedford Town Centre West planning application made by the council¹s development partner St Modwen Developments Ltd.
The development site covers 20 acres and will provide:-
* 400,000 sq ft of shopping (including department store, a food store and 40 retail units).
* Leisure (including 5/6 restaurants and a cinema complex)
* Hotel (including up to 130 rooms)
* Residential (up to 330 units)
* Up to 1,100 car parking spaces
* New bus station
Rupert Wood, senior development manager of St Modwen, said: ³St Modwen will now be pressing on with the anchor store pre-letting discussions and will be working closely with the council to conclude the key statutory processes, most notably road closures and the requisite compulsory purchase order.
“No-one should underestimate the extent of the work remaining. We are still two years away from the likely start date, but clearing this planning hurdle is without doubt a major milestone in bringing the project to fruition.”
