HATS OFF TO SITE SAFETY LESSON

In preparation for the summer holidays, St. Modwen Homes visited pupils at Hendrefoilan Primary School to give them a lesson in building site safety.

The lesson, which was given to 200 pupils aged between five and eleven, was held in a bid to promote key safety messages to local children and ensure they are not tempted to play on or near building sites over the school holidays. It was led by St. Modwen Homes’ Site Manager Phil Hare.

St. Modwen Homes is currently building 300 new homes at Hendrefoilan Park as part of the regeneration of the Student Village in Killay, Swansea, less than a mile from Hendrefoilan Primary School.

Mrs Field, Headteacher at Hendrefoilan Primary School, said: “The lesson was extremely engaging for the children, giving them a chance to point out what they thought the various hazards on a building site could be. I know the pupils loved seeing photos of the diggers and hearing what life as a housebuilder is like; especially when they got to try on their own hard hats and high visibility jackets. I’m sure the lesson will make them think twice about playing near building sites this summer.”

Following the assembly, the pupils were asked to design a poster to highlight the hazards that can be found on a building site. The winning posters, as judged by St. Modwen Homes, will be displayed on the hoarding at Hendrefoilan Park.

Ian Pickering, Construction Manager at St. Modwen Homes, said: “Safety is of huge importance to St. Modwen Homes. We have an above average safety record in the industry which is achieved by promoting best practice both to those working for the company and people living, working and playing nearby.

“Building sites, with their big machinery and new structures, can often seem like exciting places for children and, whilst we want them to be interested in the development, we also need to make sure that they understand that they can be dangerous places and are certainly not somewhere to explore or play over the holidays.”

St. Modwen Homes works with schools across the country and has promoted safety messages to over a 1,000 pupils in the first six months of this year alone.

Widely welcomed in the local community, Hendrefoilan Park currently offers a range of four bedroom homes, with prices starting from £296,995. Situated in the desirable village of Killay, the development is well located for access to local amenities, which include the University’s Singleton Park campus, Singleton Hospital and Olchfa Secondary School. Additionally, located in a leafy suburb of Swansea, Hendrefoilan is just three miles from a great selection of shops, restaurant, galleries and beaches at The Mumbles.
