St. Modwen, the UK’s leading regeneration specialist, has completed the sale of a 1.6 acre site in Billingham Town Centre to the award winning discount food retailer, Aldi.

The new food store will be located on the site of the dilapidated Billingham Arms hotel, which will be demolished in the coming weeks. The project is part of the ongoing regeneration of the town centre to deliver an improved and more attractive shopping experience for people in Billingham.

Aldi’s proposal would deliver a multi-million pound investment to the area creating up to 30 new jobs for local people, as well as additional employment during construction. It is anticipated that the store will open its doors to customer early in 2016.

An Aldi spokesperson said: Aldi is committed to investing in the town and we look forward to welcoming new customers from the Billingham community. A new store in this location will improve local shopping choice, reducing the need for residents to travel out of the area, helping to retain spending within the town.”

Richard Bannister, Regional Manager at St.Modwen, said: “This is good news for Billingham. It is a vote of confidence in the town centre that a nationally well-known brand has chosen to open a new store here. The new store is part of our ongoing work to improve the retail offer in the Centre and bring greater choice to the local community.”

St.Modwen purchased Billingham town centre in November 2014 and is currently preparing plans to continue the revitalisation of the town centre in order to create a modern and attractive retail, leisure and business environment. This follows recent work to upgrade public facilities in the Town Centre, including new lighting, street furniture and paving.
