St. Modwen, the owner of Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre, has joined forces with local theatre company, Tangled Feet, to put on a new play in a vacant shop in the centre.

Commissioned by literacy charity, ‘Spread the Word’, the play, ‘One Mile Away’, charts the lives of local people in a one-mile radius of south London. From Parliament to Elephant, Vauxhall Farm to Lower Marsh, the play has been written from contributions collected through a series of writing workshops held by Tangled Feet to bring together a variety of life experiences of south London residents.

Speaking about the initiative, Tangled Feet’s Kat Joyce, who wrote and is producing the play, said: “This is a fantastic project. The local community has been invaluable in helping to contribute to developing the play. Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre is the ideal location to stage it, given the centre’s important status as a community hub for south Londoners. We are looking forward to seeing everyone’s hard work come to life in the performances”.

James Stockdale, development manager at St. Modwen, said: “We are proud to welcome Kat Joyce and the Tangled Feet team to Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre. The shopping centre is a focal point for the local community with its great variety of shops, restaurants and leisure facilities including a bowling lane and bingo hall. We are excited to be supporting this project.”

Performances will span three nights, from 30 July – 1 August and are scheduled to start at 7pm with an additional matinee performance at 3pm on 1 August. Performances will take place at the Old Warden’s Office on the first floor of the shopping centre.
