Sir Stanley Clarke 19332004

St. Modwen Properties PLC announces with great regret the death of its President, Sir Stanley W Clarke, who passed away peacefully at his home in Barton-under-Needwood, Staffordshire on Sunday 19th September.

Sir Stanley was Chairman of the Company from its formation in 1986 through the reverse take-over by the Company of his development operation, Clarke St. Modwen Properties, until his retirement at this year’s AGM in April.

Under Sir Stanley’s chairmanship, St. Modwen has grown to become one of the leading regeneration companies in the country, specialising in town centres, brownfield land, large employment complexes and heritage projects.

During the same period, Sir Stanley, together with St. Modwen, established Northern Racing, a leading company in the horse racecourse business, which came to the AIM market last November through a reverse into Chepstow Racecourse.

Anthony Glossop, Chairman of St. Modwen Properties said:

“I have been privileged to work extremely closely with Stan for 18 years. I have seen at first hand how time and again he could inspire ordinary people to achieve extra-ordinary results through his guidance and leadership. His principles were simple but very sound – customer service, quality and excellence and hard work.

“In addition, in all his businesses he was committed to building a team that could carry on where he had to leave off and nothing pleased him more than to see young people who had joined the business with little experience make good and move into senior positions. He will be sadly missed by all of us as a colleague and a friend.”
