St Modwen increased its landholding  at the Pirelli factory site in Burton-on-Trent to around 30 acres with the acquisition of an unused nine-acre site fronting Derby Road.

This purchase follows the earlier acquisition of  21 acres bought from Pirelli in March 2005.

The Derby Road (the A5121) has been identified by East Staffordshire Borough Council as a gateway into Burton from the A38 with the strategy to improve links between the A38 and Burton town centre.  Both St Modwen and Pirelli are working with the council to support this initiative.

Ian Romano of St Modwen said: ³This is a typical St Modwen acquisition. We have established a good relationship with Pirelli and in partnership we will ensure this surplus land will be brought forward for redevelopment. It also builds on our long term commitment to Burton on Trent and the East Staffordshire district.

³We have been an active developer in the area for 40 years and this acquisition follows neatly on the imminent completion of our long-running Stretton development in a joint venture with Blue Circle.²

A Pirelli spokesperson said: ³The proposed sale of the surplus land to St Modwen will further improve Pirelli¹s cost effectiveness and streamline its operations which will strengthen its position in the marketplace.²
