The Blue Ice Plaza Complex in Solihull is offering ice skaters of all abilities the opportunity to keep cool and learn new skills at its Summer Skate Camp 2011.

Running from 14-19 August the week long camp is open to skaters of all ages and abilities from beginners to national squad members. The camp will be run by coaches of international repute including current British Champion David Richardson, current and 8x British champion, Jenna McCorkell, plus European medallist Kevin van der Perren, each individually selected to deliver an exciting skate camp utilising the latest in skating techniques.

A structured training programme catering for skaters of all standard has been developed for the camp aimed at delivering coaching excellence while also providing a fantastic experience both on and off the ice. The camp will begin with an evening ‘ice breaker’ on Sunday 14 August, enabling camp members to meet the coaches and fellow attendees and get a feel for life on the ice.

It will then run daily from 6am-11am until 19 August with on-ice classes beginning with edge work and progressing to jump techniques and spins by the end of the week. The ice work will be complemented by daily off-ice classes including warm up and cool down sessions, stretching and strength conditioning. An hour of dance and posture training will also be led each day by a professional dance teacher.

Camp organiser Stephanie Mitchell commented: “We are really excited about hosting this year’s Summer Skating Camp providing skaters with a chance to spend a week learning new skills from some of the best skaters in the UK. Aged just 23 and 25, David and Jenna are both young skaters who started off at local ice rinks like the Blue Ice Plaza and have gone on to achieve international success. We hope their achievements and coaching expertise will provide camp members with both a fantastic experience and perhaps some inspiration to continue skating after the camp ends. Equally, we are delighted to have secured Kevin van der Perren, as our international guest coach this year. An 8x Belgian national champion, Kevin is fantastically talented and, if camp attendees are lucky, we may even be able to persuade him to demonstrate the triple, triple, triple jumping combinations for which he is famous!

“The camp is fantastic value for money and a great way for youngsters to keep both fit and cool during the summer holidays. As well as being a great aerobic exercise, skating builds strength, endurance, balance, confidence and requires mental agility, ice skating is an exciting and challenging activity and a great way to meet new friends and discover the many other skating opportunities such as ice dance, hockey and speed skating.”

Places at the Summer Skating Camp are limited and sold on a first come first serve basis. A week at the camp costs £300 including all tuition, camp T-shirts and certificates. Single day camp attendance is also available. The camp is open for skaters from 8-80 years and of all abilities.

The Blue Ice Plaza Complex is jointly owned by Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council and Leisure Living Ltd – a subsidiary of St. Modwen, the UK’s leading regeneration specialist. The Complex is open from 11am-4pm for skating sessions throughout the school holidays with evening disco sessions every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.
