VULCAN SPORTS CLUBS CELEBRATE WORK STARTING ON NEW HOME

Local Vulcan sports clubs are celebrating work starting on the next phase of St. Modwen’s development at Newton-Le-Willows, following the recent planning consent.

The Vulcan sports clubs, who previously used the sports grounds and buildings at the old Vulcan Works sports ground site, will have their existing grounds and buildings relocated to new, state of the art, purpose built facilities constructed nearby.

New sports pavilion buildings and facilities will include a bowling green, indoor rifle range, multi-use games area and sports pitches. St. Modwen agreed to the delivery of new premises for the clubs as part of its initial planning consent for the area in 2004 and this latest wave of development signals St. Modwen’s long standing commitment to and investment in the area.

The move will enable the demolition of the old sports facilities in order for a new 18,000 sq ft Aldi food store to be built. The major food retailer has committed to a 20-year lease at the site and, with work scheduled to start on site in Spring next year, the store could be open by Winter 2016.

St Helens Council’s Cabinet Member for Green, Smart and Sustainable Borough, Councillor Seve Gomez-Aspron said: “”The new facilities will be absolutely excellent – and will help to restore the keen sense of pride that our local sportsmen and women have always felt when representing this area.  The recession meant that the plans had been delayed, but local councillors and MPs have always worked very closely with the constituent clubs and St. Modwen to keep this going forward. We have made excellent progress working together and the Vulcan Club will soon be back up and running with the sports ground it deserves.”

Paul Batho, Projects Manager at St. Modwen, said: “Work starting on site marks a significant step forward for the regeneration of Newton-Le-Willows and we’re really looking forward to providing these purpose-built facilities for the local sports clubs. We understand how important these clubs are within the local community which is why we made sure that our plans included a solution to safeguard their future for generations to come.”
