The local MP, councillors and representatives from Vulcan Sports Club were recently given a sneak preview of new club facilities at the multipurpose sports scheme being developed by regeneration specialist St. Modwen in Newton-le-Willows.

Due to be completed later this summer the new home for the Vulcan bowling, rifle and football clubs, previously located at the Old Vulcan Works sports ground nearby, will provide a bowling green, indoor rifle range and a multiuse games area and sports pitch.

Working alongside St. Helens Council, St. Modwen agreed to build in a new home for the sports clubs into their overall development plans for the area.

The sports clubs move to the purpose-built site, which is due for completion this summer, means St. Modwen can deliver new homes in the area along with amenities such as an 18,000 sq ft Aldi food store, public green space and a children’s play area.

Conor McGinn MP said: “I was delighted to see the rapid progress being made in building the new multi-purpose sports facilities at the Vulcan, since I first visited the site to view the plans last year.

“I would particularly like to pay tribute to the local sports clubs involved in the project and St. Modwen for the way they have worked together over recent years. It is a great example of what can be achieved when the community, politicians, businesses and statutory agencies engage positively with each other.

“Once completed these facilities will be a great asset for the entire community, and I look forward to the next stage of development and seeing sports played in this top-class environment at the Vulcan.”

As part of its initial planning consent for the area in 2004 St. Modwen committed to deliver new premises for the clubs, all of which have been an integral part of the community for many years.

Steven Knowles, Senior Regional Director, St. Modwen added: “The new Vulcan Sports Club is due to be completed in the summer and this forms just part of the regeneration St. Modwen has underway in the area backed.

“Providing modern, new sports facilities for the Vulcan sports clubs is a key part of our commitment to Newton-le-Willows and the local community. Through our plans to regenerate the area we have ensured the home of these clubs was safeguarded and will be protected for years to come.”

Cllr Seve Gomez Aspron, Cabinet Member – Green Smart & Sustainable Borough, said: “We have worked very closely with the constituent clubs and St. Modwen to ensure the Vulcan clubs will be back up and running as soon as possible with the sports ground it deserves.

“Once complete, these top of the range facilities will help restore the keen sense of pride that our local sportsmen and women have always felt when representing this area.“

George Marsh, Vulcan Bowling Club said: “It’s great that work on the new facilities for the Vulcan Sports Clubs is coming on so quickly. All of us at the Vulcan Bowling Club can’t wait to settle into our new home and it will be brilliant to have brand new bowling greens to use for training and matches.”
