We’ve got the power: Substation works progress at Glan Llyn, Newport

We’ve got the power! Often lost in the creation of new places is the amount of infrastructure work that goes on behind the scenes to keep the lights on and the taps running. In this video, our Strategic Land & Regeneration team has been busy progressing work on the new primary substation at Glan Llyn, Newport.

Part of our wider regeneration of the former steelworks site, two new transformers will provide a combined 24MVA of power to the development. The transformers took 38 weeks to manufacture in Italy and came across to the UK earlier this year. They are a crucial part of the substation, stepping down the voltage from National Grid’s network to feed new homes and industrial and logistics development at Glan Llyn and St. Modwen Park Newport.

This video highlights the complex engineering involved to deliver this key piece of infrastructure, which included the relocation of two major pylons and tunnelling under two gas mains and an active private railway. The project is scheduled to complete in September.
